Urban ecology

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Urban ecology is a special way of studying science. It looks at how living things interact with each other in cities. An urban environment is a place filled with many tall buildings and paved roads.

These places create a very unique landscape for nature. Today, more than 50% of all people live in cities. Experts believe that in 40 years, two-thirds of the world will live in urban centers.

Because so many people live in cities, this study is very important. The goal is to find a balance between human life and the natural world.

Scientists use many different tools to see how cities work. One way is through remote sensing. This means they collect data from far away using satellites or airplanes.

They can use this to look at weather patterns or the green plants in a city. Another way is by using heat mapping. This shows how temperature changes across different parts of a city.

Scientists also use chemical tests to find pollutants. They might test soil or water for things like nitrates or heavy metals. These tests help them see how industrial runoff affects living things.

This field of study has a very interesting history. Long ago, scientists like Charles Darwin studied how animals compete for food.

In the 1970s, experts began to focus more on cities. Jean-Marie Pelt helped show this by creating a water garden in Metz. In 1977, he wrote a book about how humans can reconnect with nature. Other researchers like Brian Davis and Herbert Sukopp also wrote about urban life in the late 1970s. By 1986, researchers Forman and Godron began to group different types of landscapes. They showed how much humans change the land from natural areas to cities.

There are many important research centers working on these problems today. In 2001, the University of Washington started the Urban Ecology Research Laboratory.

This lab looks at how land changes and how cities can adapt. In 2008, the Urban Ecology Laboratory was founded in Costa Rica. It is the first center to study tropical urban ecosystems. There are also special sites called Long-term Ecological Research sites. One active site is in Central Arizona-Phoenix, which started in 1997. Another is in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. These sites collect data on rain and temperature for many years.

Humans change the world around them in many big ways. This is often called urbanization. When cities grow, people often cut down forests to build homes.

This is known as deforestation. We also change how water moves through the land. Humans can build dams or even change the direction of a river. For example, the Chicago River was actually reversed!

Shipping can also move new species to new places. Even though humans change so much, we are also finding new solutions. We are learning how to use science to help cities and nature live together.
