A city is a large place where many people live together.

There is no single rule for how big a city must be. Some places say a city needs 1,500 people. Other groups say it needs 50,000 people. Many people define a city by its special role in a country. Cities often act as hubs for business, religion, or culture. They are places where people work on tasks that are not farming.

Most cities are built in clever ways to help people live. Many sit near a coast or a river for easy travel.

This access to water helps with trade and moving goods. Since cities cannot grow their own food, they rely on the countryside. They use large systems for housing, water, and moving people around. These systems include roads, buses, and pipes for sanitation. This density makes it easier for people and businesses to meet and work.

Cities have been around for thousands of years.

Some very old places like Jericho and Çatalhöyük are from the eighth millennium BC. In ancient Iraq, the city of Uruk was a major center in the mid-fourth millennium BC. Some people think cities grew because of farming and extra food. Others think they grew for fishing or for military defense. Ancient leaders like Alexander the Great even founded new cities. These early settlements helped create the first civilizations.

Every city has a unique shape and layout.

Some use a grid plan with straight streets that cross like a net. The Indus Valley Civilization used this style for cities like Mohenjo-Daro. Other cities grow in circles or radial patterns. In these cities, main roads all lead to one central point. Dutch cities like Amsterdam use canals to mark their growth. If a city is on a mountain, it might use winding roads.

This is a huge change for our planet. Living close together can be good for the Earth. Compact cities use less land and have better transport. However, cities can also face hard jobs like pollution. They can also create "heat islands" that feel much warmer.
