These places can be very small or very large. Some are just a few homes grouped together. Others are huge cities with many buildings and people.

A settlement often includes many built things. You might see roads, parks, or even ponds. It can also have churches, mills, or large houses. These structures help the community function every day.

Settlements change and grow over a long time. People often move to new places to live. This movement is called migration. Sometimes, a settlement might be left behind. This can happen because of war or natural disasters. It can also happen if a dam is built and floods a town.

These empty places are often called ghost towns. Some people even visit them to see the old buildings.

Humans have been making settlements for a very long time. The earliest evidence was found at Jebel Irhoud.

Around 17,000 BC, people lived in huts made of mud and branches. These were found at the Oholo site near the Sea of Galilee. Later, the Natufians built houses in the Levant around 10,000 BC. Once people invented agriculture, villages became much more common. One of the oldest farming villages is Jarmo in Iraq.

Today, the world is changing very fast. More people are moving into cities than ever before. In 1950, only 20% of the world lived in cities. Now, 45% of the 8.2 billion people on Earth live in cities.

By the year 2050, experts think two-thirds of people will live in urban areas. We are also seeing more megacities. These are huge cities with over 10 million people. There may be 33 of these megacities by 2025.

Different countries have different names for these places. In Australia, a populated place must have 200 people. In the United States, people use words like "civil" or "census" areas. These terms help governments keep track of everyone. In Croatia, the government calls them "naselja." Even the way a town is described can change depending on which country you are in. This helps leaders manage roads, schools, and other important services.
