Settlements have many different parts. They include roads, parks, and ponds. They might also have churches or mills. People move to new places to start settlements. This is called migration.

Humans have lived in settlements for a long time. Very old remains were found at Jebel Irhoud. Around 17,000 BC, people lived in huts made of mud and branches.

Later, people built villages after they learned to farm.

Today, more people live in cities than ever before. In 1950, only 20% of people lived in cities. Now, 45% of the world's people live in cities. Many people also live in towns.

Sometimes, people must leave a settlement. This can happen because of war or floods. It can also happen if a dam is built. These empty places are called ghost towns.
