People can grow small vegetables like radishes on a tiny balcony. Others might use large, empty lots to plant community gardens. Some even use rooftops to grow food.

In some places, people grow flowers and vegetables under special metal halide lamps. This allows them to garden even when they are indoors. These gardens can be small individual plots or large shared spaces.

Growing plants in cities has a very long history. During the Neolithic Revolution, early cities often had market gardens and farms. These were important trading centers for the people living there. Later, during the Industrial Revolution, cities grew very fast. Many green spaces were replaced by brick and asphalt. After the nineteenth century, cities began building parks to help people stay healthy.

Modern gardening movements grew from many different needs. In the 1960s and 1970s, movements for peace and the environment helped start new garden projects. In the 1980s and 1990s, the environmental justice movement also used vacant lands. The American Community Gardening Association says that many cities have these programs. They estimate that municipal governments and non-profits run gardens in about 250 cities. This number might actually be twice as large. A 1994 survey found that 6.7 million households would like to garden if a plot was nearby.

Gardening offers many benefits to the people who do it. It can help people eat more nutritious food at a lower cost.

Being near plants can also help people feel calm and less stressed. Gardening is a great way to get low-impact exercise. One study showed that men who gardened had a body mass index 2.36 lower than their neighbors. Women who gardened had a body mass index 1.88 lower than their neighbors. Even green roofs on buildings can help by keeping homes cool in summer.
