Gardens come in many different sizes. Some are huge, like the 800 hectare Versailles gardens. Others are very small, like plants grown in containers inside a house. Gardening is often different from farming. Farming usually focuses on making goods to sell. It might also include raising animals. Gardening usually focuses on beauty or leisure. When people grow food, they often do it on a smaller scale. This is usually for themselves or their local community.

Gardening has a very long history. Some people believe gardening began with forest gardening. This is when people used fire to help plants grow. This might have happened as far back as 1.5 million years ago. Scientists see evidence of people growing crops from 23,000 years ago. In the Americas, Indigenous groups had many traditions. They used fire to help the land. They also grew crops like maize, beans, and squash. They even made orchards and berry patches. Many foods we eat today, like potatoes and tomatoes, came from these groups.

Many different styles of gardens have become popular over time. In the 16th and 17th centuries, gardens became very balanced and neat. They used hedges to divide different sections. People also liked knot gardens and hedge mazes. Cottage gardens also became very famous. These started in small villages. Workers grew food and herbs in these gardens. They also planted flowers for decoration. Today, people still garden in many ways. They grow things in their backyards or even in small pots.
