These plants are grown to produce food like fruit or nuts. Many orchards are large and used for selling food to many people. Some orchards are part of big gardens just to look beautiful. A fruit garden is similar but it is usually much smaller. These gardens might focus more on berry shrubs than on fruit trees.

Farmers use a specific layout to plant their crops in a system. This is called an orchard layout. Some methods use a square or rectangular pattern. Other ways include the quincunx, triangular, or hexagonal methods. Some farmers use contour or terrace methods to plant on hills. Most big orchards use a regular grid of rows. This makes it easy to maintain the plants and gather the fruit.

Orchards have been part of history for a long time. In the 19th century, Tenbury Wells in England was called "The Town in the Orchard." It was surrounded by many fruit trees. In the United States, the writer Louisa May Alcott lived in an orchard house. In Utah, Mormon pioneers kept orchards in what is now Capitol Reef National Park. These places show how people have grown food for many years. Even today, some towns celebrate this history with festivals like Applefest.

Different parts of the world have famous orchard areas. In the United States, apple orchards are huge in eastern Washington state. Orange orchards are very common in Florida and southern California. In Canada, the Niagara Peninsula is a major area for fruit. This place is known as the Canada Fruitbelt. Many people go there to pick their own fruit during harvest. In Europe, the area of Murcia in Spain is famous for citrus crops.

Orchards are also important homes for living things. In Germany, people call meadow orchards "Streuobstwiese." These are fields with scattered fruit trees. They provide a home for many different animal species. For example, a bird called the hoopoe nests in old tree hollows. Modern orchards can look different than old ones. Some use tiny plants on supports called trellises to grow more fruit. This helps keep the land productive and full of life.
