Most gardens are outdoors and planned by people. The main thing that makes a garden different from the wild is control. People choose which plants to grow and where to put them. A garden can use natural things like soil and water. It can also use man-made things like statues or stone paths. Some gardens use fountains, ponds, or even waterfalls.

You might find a garden used for growing food or just for looking at.

Gardens work in many different ways to serve people. Some are ornamental, which means they are made to be beautiful. Other gardens produce food crops like herbs and vegetables. These food gardens are smaller than farms. They need more work by hand and are used for eating or for fun.

Flower gardens use different heights and colors to delight the senses. People use gardens to relax in a hammock or watch birds. Some people even use them to learn about how nature works.

Gardens have a very long history in many lands. In China, the earliest gardens were in the Yellow River valley. These were made during the Shang dynasty between 1600 and 1046 BC.

Some were large parks for kings to hunt in. Others were for growing fruit and vegetables. In Japan, the first records of gardens appear in the year 720 CE. These were pleasure gardens for emperors and nobles. Some emperors even enjoyed watching carp swim in their ponds.

Different cultures created very specific styles of gardens. In France, many gardens use a formal style. This style uses geometrical shapes and neatly clipped plants.

This was meant to show the triumph of man over nature. This is different from English landscape gardens. English gardens try to look natural and undisturbed.

Korean gardens are also known for being simple and natural. They try to merge perfectly with the world around them.

Many things we see today come from these old ideas. The word garden actually comes from words meaning an enclosure.

In Britain, a garden is a small enclosed area near a house. In America, people often call this a yard. Even zoos were once called zoological gardens. Today, landscape architects work to design these spaces for everyone. They design gardens for public parks and private homes. This helps people connect with the changing seasons and the earth.
