These containers must have at least one transparent side. This allows people to watch plants and animals living underwater. People use them to keep many different things. You might see fish, snails, or even turtles.

Some very large public aquariums hold sharks, dolphins, or even whales.

Whether they are small glass bowls or huge tanks, they bring the water world to us.

To keep animals healthy, an aquarium must work like a tiny ecosystem.

In 1850, a chemist named Robert Warington explained how this works. He discovered that adding plants to the water is very important. These plants give off oxygen, which is the gas animals need to breathe.

This process works well as long as there are not too many animals in the tank. If the number of animals stays low, the plants can provide enough oxygen for everyone. This balance keeps the water safe for the residents.

Many people helped make the aquarium a popular hobby.

In 1832, a French biologist named Jeanne Villepreux-Power used tanks for science. She discovered that certain sea creatures make their own shells. Later, Philip Henry Gosse became known as the "Father of the Aquarium."

He coined the name "aquarium" using Latin roots. In 1853, he opened the first public aquarium at the London Zoo. This helped start a huge craze for fishkeeping across England and the world.

Aquarium designs have changed a lot over many years.

In 1369, the Hongwu Emperor of China used large porcelain tubs for goldfish. During the Victorian era, many home tanks had glass fronts and wooden sides. These often had slate bottoms that were heated from below.

In 1908, the first mechanical air pump was invented. It used running water instead of electricity to move air. Later, electricity allowed for lights, heaters, and filters to make tanks even better.

Today, keeping fish is a very popular activity.
