These fish can live alone or in a large group called a school. People enjoy watching them in aquariums at home or in shops. Many people also catch these fish to eat them. Some fish are even grown on farms. This is called aquaculture, which is the farming of aquatic life.

This is a very big industry for many people around the world.

Different fish eat different things to stay healthy. Herbivores eat plants like algae and seagrass. Some fish eat red, green, brown, or blue algae. Carnivores are different because they only eat meat. They might eat shrimp, plankton, or tiny crustaceans. They will never eat algae.

This way of eating helps keep the ocean in balance.

Fish need a good home to survive. A habitat is the place where a fish lives. This place must have the right water temperature and salt levels. It also needs the right amount of light and oxygen. Some fish live in the deep sea where it is dark. Other fish live in estuaries where rivers meet the ocean.

These places provide everything the fish needs to grow.

Humans use many saltwater fish in different ways. The United States imports about 10 million marine fish every year. This is for use in saltwater aquariums. There are about 2,000 different species used this way. People also use aquaculture to provide half of the world's fish supply.

This helps meet the high demand for seafood.

However, saltwater fish face many hard jobs today. Overfishing happens when too many fish are taken from the sea. This makes it hard for fish populations to grow back. This can lead to bycatch, where unwanted animals are caught by mistake. In the U.S., about 17% to 22% of the catch is discarded.
