An apple is a round, edible fruit that grows on an apple tree.

These trees belong to the genus Malus. There are more than 7,500 different types of apples, which scientists call cultivars.

People grow these different types for many uses. Some are made for eating raw and snacking. Other types are bred specifically for cooking or making cider and juice. Apples are very important in many stories and religions too.

Growing a new apple tree from a seed is a hard job. Apples grown from seeds usually look very different from the parent tree. They often lack the good traits that people want. To fix this, farmers use a way of growing trees called clonal grafting.

They attach a branch to a special bottom part called a rootstock. This rootstock helps control how fast the tree grows. It also helps control how large the tree becomes. Smaller trees make it much easier for people to harvest the fruit.

Apple trees have a long history in our world. Their wild ancestor is a tree called Malus sieversii.

This wild tree is still found in the mountains of Central Asia. Scientists think apples were first grown there between 4,000 and 10,000 years ago. From those mountains, apples traveled along the Silk Road to Europe. European colonists later brought them to North America. Even in the 1st century, a writer named Pliny the Elder described how to store apples using straw or mats.

Apple trees have many interesting parts to study. The trees are deciduous, which means they lose their leaves each year.

In the spring, the trees grow blossoms. These flowers often start rose-pink and turn white as they open. The fruit itself is a pome that ripens in late summer or autumn. Inside the fruit, there is a core with small chambers called carpels.

Most apples have five carpels, and each one holds one or two seeds.

Apples are a great way to see how nature and science work together. The skin of the fruit has a layer of wax to protect it. This wax is called epicuticular wax. The different colors of the skin come from the amount of overcolor on the fruit. This color can range from 0% to 100%. In 2010, scientists even sequenced the apple genome. This means they mapped out all the genetic information inside the fruit. This helps researchers find better ways to control diseases and grow better apples.
