These trees grow food like fruit or nuts. Some orchards are in large gardens to look pretty. Most big orchards use a neat grid pattern. This makes it easy to pick the fruit.

Many orchards grow near water. This helps keep the weather from getting too extreme. In the United States, apple and orange orchards are very big. In Canada, people can visit to pick their own fruit. Some orchards in Germany are called Streuobstwiese. This means a meadow with scattered fruit trees.

These meadow orchards are good homes for animals. A bird called the hoopoe nests in old tree holes. Modern orchards can look different too. Some use tiny trees on supports called trellises. This lets farmers grow many plants in a small space. People work hard to protect old orchards and plant new ones. This helps keep nature healthy for everyone.
