People have studied fruit for a long time. In ancient Mesopotamia, Sumerians grew dates and grapes. They also grew apples, melons, and figs. In Egypt, people grew grapes and watermelon. Later, they grew olives and pomegranates. The Romans were very good at growing fruit. They used ways to store fruit that we still use today.

In the United States, fruit growing grew fast in the 1800s. The USDA made a fruit division in 1886. Henry E. Van Deman was the first chief. Since they did not have many cameras, artists drew the fruit. They made beautiful watercolor pictures of new fruit types. Today, there are about 7,700 of these old drawings. They help researchers and artists learn about fruit history.
