People use pruning and tying to make trees grow flat. This is often done against a wall or a fence.

This helps fruit grow in gardens with little space. It also makes the plants look like art.

This practice may have started with the ancient Romans. In the Middle Ages, people in Europe made it an art. They grew fruit inside castle walls. This kept the open space clear. A wall can also help the plants. It reflects sunlight and keeps heat at night. This gives the fruit more time to grow.

There are many ways to shape a tree. A V-shape is a common start. You can make a Belgian fence by planting many V-shaped trees in a line. Another way is a fan shape. This looks like a spreading fan. Some trees grow in a single line called a cordon. Apple and pear trees are great for this. You can even shape vines or shrubs. It is a way to turn gardening into a beautiful design.
