It acts like a large greenhouse. People use it to protect fruit trees in winter. Many trees, like oranges and lemons, cannot survive the cold.

In the 17th century, these fruits arrived in large amounts. But the cold European winters could kill them.

In the past, glass was very expensive. Having an orangery showed that a person was very wealthy.

These buildings were more than just plant rooms. They were beautiful parts of a garden. Owners would take guests on tours to see the plants. They also showed off the fine architecture. Some orangery rooms even had fountains or grottos.

Most orangery buildings face south. This helps them catch the most sunlight. They often have thick stone or brick walls. These walls help keep the heat inside. Early builders used straw to help with insulation.

Some even had heat under the floors. Today, people still build them to look classic. They remain lovely places to enjoy nature.
