It has walls and roofs made of clear parts. These parts are often glass or plastic. Sunlight passes through the clear walls. Once inside, the light turns into heat. This keeps the air warm and moist.

This helps plants grow even when it is cold outside.

People have used greenhouses for a long time. Around 30 CE, the Romans built early versions. They wanted to grow cucumbers for an emperor. They put plants in carts to catch the sun. In the 1450s, people in Korea made a new way. They used an ondol, which is a heating system. It used pipes under the floor to add heat.

Today, greenhouses come in many sizes. Some are small sheds for homes. Others are huge buildings for farms. Large farms in the Netherlands grow millions of vegetables.
