A greenhouse is a special building made to control the weather inside. It helps plants grow by managing the temperature and how much moisture is in the air. Most greenhouses have large walls and roofs made of clear materials. These materials let sunlight pass through easily. Once the sunlight is inside, it gets trapped and turns into heat. This keeps the inside warm even when it is cold outside.

Modern greenhouses use glass or different kinds of plastic. Some use polycarbonate, which is a rigid plastic. Others use polyethylene, which is a type of plastic film.

There are many different ways these buildings work. Some are called glasshouses because they are made only of glass panes. Other buildings are called hothouses if they use a heating system to stay warm. Greenhouses can be very small, like a tiny shed called a cold frame. They can also be huge industrial buildings.

Large commercial greenhouses are high-tech places for growing fruit and flowers. Inside these big buildings, computers might control the light and the air. This helps create the perfect home for every specific plant. They can manage the humidity, which is how much water is in the air.

People have been trying to control plant environments for a very long time. Around 30 CE, the Roman Empire made an early attempt. Emperor Tiberius needed to eat one cucumber every day for his health. Since cucumbers are tender, they do not grow easily all year. The Romans put plants in wheeled carts to catch the sun. At night, they moved the carts inside to keep them warm. They used oiled cloth or sheets of selenite to cover the plants.

In the 1450s, a new way of heating greenhouses appeared in Korea. A man named Soon ui Jeon wrote about this in a book called Sangayorok. He described how to use an ondol system to grow plants in winter. An ondol is a heating system that uses pipes under the floor. They also heated a cauldron of water to make steam. This added both heat and moisture to the air.

In the 1700s, Andrew Faneuil built the first American greenhouse in Boston. Later, George Washington asked for details on a greenhouse design in 1784.

Greenhouses have changed as technology has improved over the years. In the 1800s, people built massive glass structures called palm houses. These were tall enough for large trees to grow inside. One famous example is the Belfast Botanic Gardens, finished in 1840.

In the 20th century, new shapes like the geodesic dome became popular. You can see these at the Eden Project in England.

Today, many farmers use gutter-connected greenhouses. These are rows of buildings joined together by a common wall. This design helps them save energy while growing food for everyone.
