Precast concrete is a smart way to build things.

Instead of pouring concrete at a messy building site, workers make it in a factory. This factory is called a precast plant. Making parts in a plant allows workers to watch the concrete very closely. They can make sure it cures, which means it hardens properly. This controlled environment helps keep the quality of the concrete very high. Using these parts can make building much faster and safer for everyone.

How does the way it works actually happen? First, workers pour wet concrete into a reusable mold. These molds are called forms. They can be made of steel, plastic, or even wood. Once the concrete hardens in the mold, the part is ready. Then, a truck carries the part to the construction site. Finally, machines maneuver the heavy parts into their exact spots.

Some parts even have a foam core inside. This foam makes the walls lighter and helps keep heat inside.

People have been using concrete for a very long time. Ancient Roman builders poured concrete into molds to make tunnels and aqueducts. Modern precast technology has a much newer history. In 1905, a city engineer named John Alexander Brodie pioneered precast buildings in Liverpool, England. Soon after, in 1906, tram stables were built in the same city. This idea spread all over the world to places like Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

There are many different types of precast items used today. In the US, two main groups manage these industries. The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute focuses on things like bridges and parking garages. The National Precast Concrete Association makes utility and underground products. In Australia, the New South Wales Government Railways used these parts for 145 buildings. They built many of these stations between 1917 and 1932.

You can see precast concrete in almost every part of your life. It is used for highway bridges, school buildings, and even large warehouses. It can even be used to make things for farms, like cattle feed bunks. Some parts are used underground for water pipes and sewage systems. Even near the ocean, heavy precast units protect the coast.
