Automation is a way to make machines work with less help from people.

It uses technology to follow pre-set rules. These rules tell machines how to make decisions and act. Machines can use many different things to do this work. Some use air or water pressure to move. Others use electricity, electronic parts, or even computers.

This helps industries save money on labor and materials. It also helps save electricity and reduces waste. Using automation makes making things more accurate and precise.

One common way it works is through a closed-loop control system.

In this setup, a controller checks a specific value. It compares that value to a goal called a set point. If the two numbers are different, the machine finds the error. The controller then changes an input to fix that error. This process is called negative feedback. It helps the system stay steady even when things change.

A simple example is a thermostat in a house. It controls a boiler to keep the room at one temperature.

People have used automatic ideas for a very long time.

Around 270 BC, Ctesibius described a float regulator for a water clock. This was one of the earliest feedback-controlled tools. Later, in 850 AD, the Banū Mūsā brothers described automatic controls. They even made two-step level controls for liquids. In the 1600s, Christiaan Huygens invented the centrifugal governor. This device helped adjust the gap between millstones.

These early inventors used trial-and-error to make things work.

Many big changes happened during the Industrial Revolution.

Steam engines needed ways to control their speed and power. In 1745, Jacques de Vaucanson made the first automated loom. Around 1800, Joseph Marie Jacquard used punch cards to program looms. In 1771, Richard Arkwright made a spinning mill driven by water. By 1785, Oliver Evans made the first fully automated industrial process.

In the 1940s, the term automation became more common. Ford established an automation department during that time. This helped industries adopt many new feedback controllers.

Today, automation is part of almost everything we use.

It helps steer ships and fly airplanes with less human help. It is also used in big factories to make glass bottles.

One machine in 1905 could make 17,280 bottles in a single day. This was much faster than people working by hand. Automation also helps run telephone networks and large power stations. Even modern online assistants use these smart, automatic ideas. It is a huge part of how our world works.
