Cybernetics is a special way of studying how things work in loops.

This study looks at circular processes called feedback. In a feedback loop, the result of an action comes back to the start. This result then changes what happens next. This loop helps a system stay on track. It is a very important idea for many different subjects. Scientists use it to understand machines and living things. They also use it to study how people act in groups.

To understand how it works, think about steering a ship. The word cybernetics comes from an ancient Greek word for a person who steers.

A person steering a ship must watch the wind and the waves. If a wave pushes the ship off course, the person sees this change. They then move the rudder to fix the direction. This movement is a response to what just happened. The effect of the action circles back to guide the next action. This constant loop allows the ship to keep a steady course. This is how feedback helps a system manage itself.

Many different experts helped build this field during the 1940s.

A group of scientists held meetings called the Macy conferences. These meetings helped people from many different jobs talk to each other. In the UK, a group called the Ratio Club met to share ideas. They were a mix of doctors, mathematicians, and engineers. These early meetings helped turn many different ideas into one big field. This allowed people to use a shared language to solve hard jobs.

Norbert Wiener was a very famous scientist in this field.

He helped coin the name cybernetics in the summer of 1947. In 1948, he wrote a book called Cybernetics: Or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine. He described cybernetics as the study of control in animals and machines. Other thinkers like Margaret Mead also helped the field grow. She saw it as a way for many different types of scientists to communicate. The field has changed a lot since those first years.

Cybernetics connects many things we see in our world today.

It helps us understand how artificial intelligence works through neural networks. It also helps us study how social systems and economies function. In the 1960s, some used it for economic planning in a project called Cybersyn.

Today, it helps us see how humans and new technology live together. Whether it is a machine or a forest, feedback is everywhere. It is a tool that helps us see the patterns in our world.
