This feeling is the goal of ergonomics. People also call this field human factors or human factors engineering. It is a science that studies how humans interact with systems. The main goal is to make things fit the person using them. This helps people stay safe, healthy, and very comfortable. Good design also helps people do their jobs much better.

Ergonomics works by looking at how a person and a tool fit together. Specialists look at the job being done and the demands on the person. They check the size and shape of the equipment being used. They also look at how information is shown to the user. There are three main areas of study in this field. Physical ergonomics looks at how the body moves and sits.

Cognitive ergonomics studies mental processes like memory and making choices. Organizational ergonomics looks at how groups and systems work together.

The idea of ergonomics has a very old history. The word comes from Greek words meaning "work" and "natural law." A Polish scientist named Wojciech Jastrzębowski used the word in 1857. A French scholar named Jean-Gustave Courcelle-Seneuil used it in 1858 too. Later, a British psychologist named Hywel Murrell brought the word to English. He used it during a meeting at the UK's Admiralty in 1949. This meeting helped start The Ergonomics Society to study these ideas.

There are many important facts and numbers in this science. In the United States, about 1.8 million workers face musculoskeletal disorders every year. These are injuries that cause pain in the muscles or bones. Nearly 600,000 of these injuries are serious enough to make people miss work. Ergonomics can help prevent these hard problems. For example, it can help design safer roads for drivers. In the U.S., driver error helps cause 44% of fatal car collisions.

You can see ergonomics in many things you use every day.

A special keyboard designed for comfort is a great example. Some people even use sit-stand desks or treadmill desks at work. These tools try to fit the task to the human body. Scientists even use robots to help people work more safely. By matching machines to our bodies, we can live and work better.
