A user interface is how people and machines interact.

Designers create these for many things. They work on computers, cars, and mobile devices. They even design interfaces for home appliances. The main goal is to make things easy to use. This focus is called usability. Good design helps you finish a task quickly. It should not draw too much attention to itself.

There are different ways to use an interface. A graphical user interface, or GUI, uses pictures on a screen. You might see a desktop on your computer. Some machines use your voice to work. Smart assistants like Siri or Alexa use voice control. Other systems use gestures. This means you move your body to interact with 3D worlds. These are often used in virtual reality games.

Designers use a method called design thinking to build these tools. This framework was created in 2004 by David M. Kelley. He founded the d.school at Stanford University. The process is often called EDIPT. It stands for empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Designers do not always follow these steps in a straight line. They might jump back and forth between stages. This helps them refine their ideas through many small changes.

To use EDIPT, designers start by empathizing with people. They study what users need and what they find hard. Next, they define a problem with a single sentence. Then, they ideate by brainstorming many possible solutions. After that, they build a prototype. A prototype is a model of the design. Finally, they test the model with real people. This testing helps them see if the design actually works.

Experts like Jakob Nielsen and Don Norman study this field. They co-founded the Nielsen Norman Group in 1998. Nielsen helped start the movement for interface usability. Usability is measured by effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction. Effectiveness means you reach your goal. Efficiency means you use few resources to get there. Satisfaction means the user finds the system acceptable.
