A cyborg is a living being that has both organic and machine parts.

The word is a mix of two other words: cybernetic and organism. This describes a living thing that uses technology to fix a body part or improve an ability. Unlike a robot, which is made of machines, a cyborg must be a living organism. These machines rely on feedback to work well. Feedback means the technology listens to the body and reacts to what it finds.

This technology works through a step-by-step way of interacting with the body. First, a device like a pacemaker measures electrical signals inside a person. Next, the device performs signal processing to understand those signals. Finally, it can deliver electrical stimuli to the body to keep a person alive. This creates a loop where the machine and the body work together. Some implants, like cochlear implants, use this same feedback to help people hear. Other tools might use sensors to help a person feel pressure or heat.

People have imagined these mixtures for a very long time. In 1843, Edgar Allan Poe wrote about a man with many machine parts. Later, in 1911, Jean de La Hire wrote about a hero called the Nyctalope. The actual word "cyborg" was not created until 1960. Two scientists named Manfred Clynes and Nathan S. Kline came up with it. They wanted to describe humans who could survive in space. They thought humans would need a close relationship with machines to explore the stars.

There are many real examples of this technology being used today. The C-Leg system is a machine used to replace a human leg. It uses sensors to help a person walk with a natural gait. Another company, Integrum, makes the OPRA Implant System. This system is anchored directly into a person's skeleton through osseointegration. Scientists also work with tiny things called carbon nanotubes in labs. In 2013, researchers showed how mixing these tubes with yeast cells could create cyborg tissue. This special material can even sense changes in temperature.

We can see how these ideas link to the world around us. Many people think of cyborgs as something from a movie. However, some thinkers say we are already becoming cyborgs through our tools. Using a smartphone or a hearing aid can be seen as a way to enhance our natural bodies. Even things like libraries or electrical wires are part of a larger system of technology. Some scientists believe that future beings will build themselves using artificial intelligence. This would be a new step in the long history of life and machines.
