A robot is a special kind of machine.

It can follow a set of steps using a computer. This field of study is called robotics. Most robots are built to do a specific job well. They often care more about working than looking pretty. Some robots look like people, which are called humanoids.

Others are used in big factories to do hard work.

These machines can go where humans cannot easily go. They might work in outer space or the deep sea. They can also do jobs that are too dangerous for people.

Robots work by following instructions from a control device.

This device can be inside the robot or outside. Some robots are autonomous, meaning they can act on their own. Other robots are semi-autonomous and need a person to help. A robot might use sensors to feel its surroundings. It can then process that information to make a move. This allows a robot to move parts of itself. It can even manipulate things in its environment. This makes it seem like the machine is thinking.

People have dreamed of moving machines for a very long time.

Ancient Greek engineers made machines that used steam or water. In China, Su Song built a water clock in 1066.

This clock had little figures that chimed the hours. In the 13th century, al-Jazari built a machine that served drinks.

Around 1495, Leonardo da Vinci sketched a mechanical human. It could sit up and move its head. These early machines were often called automata.

Modern robots became more advanced with new technology. In 1948, William Grey Walter created electronic autonomous robots in England.

Later, George Devol built the first digital programmable robot.

He named it Unimate in 1954. In 1961, General Motors bought it for their factory. It lifted hot metal at the Inland Fisher Guide Plant. This was in Ewing Township, New Jersey. This helped keep human workers safe from the heat. The word "robot" actually came from a Czech play in 1923.

Today, we see robots in many parts of our lives. Some robots are small, like microscopic nanorobots. Others are large, like the MQ-1 Predator drone.

We even see robots that look like animals. Some are used as therapy dogs to help people. In the future, we might see more autonomous cars on roads. We might also see more robots helping us in our homes. This technology changes how we work and live every day. It is a field that is still growing fast.
