A system is a group of parts that work together as one whole. These parts follow a set of rules to interact with each other.

Every system has a boundary that separates it from its environment. This boundary helps us decide what is inside the system and what is outside. We can also use models to represent a system. Models help us understand how a system might behave in the future.

Systems work in different ways depending on how they interact with the world. Most things we see are open systems. An open system takes in inputs and produces outputs. These inputs and outputs can be matter, energy, or even information.

For example, a car or the Earth are open systems. A closed system is a bit different. It can exchange energy with the environment, but it does not exchange matter. A computer is an example of a closed system. An isolated system is the most separate kind. It does not exchange matter or energy with anything else. Scientists use the Universe as a theoretical example of an isolated system.

People have studied systems for a long time. In the 1800s, a French physicist named Sadi Carnot studied systems in steam engines. He looked at how heat could make a substance do work. In 1850, a German physicist named Rudolf Clausius expanded this idea. He added the idea of the surroundings to the study. Later, a biologist named Ludwig von Bertalanffy became a leader in general systems theory. In 1945, he introduced laws that apply to many different kinds of systems. In the late 1940s, Norbert Wiener and Ross Ashby used math to study systems. They called this new field cybernetics.

There are many specific types of systems in our world. A subsystem is a smaller system found inside a larger one. For example, the IBM Mainframe Job Entry Subsystem is a group of parts that work together.

In computer science, an information system uses hardware and software to work. You might know the Dewey Decimal Classification used in libraries. That is a system used to organize information. There are also economic systems. These systems help societies produce and use goods and services. They include people, institutions, and rules about resources.

Systems are all around us in every part of life. Natural systems include things like galaxies, the Solar System, and living things. Human-made systems are designed for specific tasks. This includes physical structures or even ways of thinking. Even the human brain and our mental processes are seen as systems.

We can see systems in how cities grow or how people act in groups. Whether it is a tiny atom or the huge universe, everything follows these patterns. Understanding systems helps us see how the whole world is connected.
