Closed system

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Scientists often study things using a special idea called a closed system. This is a way to look at a group of parts that stays separate from the world around it. In this kind of setup, matter cannot move in or out of the system. Matter is the physical stuff that makes up everything we see. However, energy is still allowed to move across the boundary. Energy can move in as heat or as work.

This makes the system easier for scientists to study and understand.

How a closed system works depends on the type of science being used. In thermodynamics, a closed system can exchange heat or work with its surroundings. It cannot, however, exchange any matter. This is different from an open system, which can move both energy and matter. It is also different from an isolated system, which cannot move anything at all. In chemistry, an ice cooler is a great example of this. The ice and water stay inside, but heat can still move through the walls.

Many thinkers have helped define these rules over many years. For example, researchers like Prigogine and Defay wrote about chemical thermodynamics in the 1950s. Other scientists like Tisza and Guggenheim also helped explain these ideas in their books. In 1960, H.B. Callen wrote about how these terms are used in thermodynamics. Some writers even use the term "closed system" to mean what others call an "isolated system." These different books and authors help us understand how systems behave in different fields.

There are many specific facts to know about how these systems behave. In a simple system, the number of particles stays exactly the same. If a chemical reaction happens, new molecules might form or be destroyed. Even then, the total number of each kind of atom stays constant. This is because no atoms can escape or enter the system. In engineering, a closed system is sometimes called a bound system. In this case, every input and every result is known within a specific time.

You can think of a closed system as a way to limit distractions. By stopping matter from moving, scientists can focus on just one thing. It helps them solve very hard problems by removing outside factors. In quantum physics, Schrödinger's equation describes how a closed system behaves. It shows how a system changes over time without exchanging information with the outside world. This helps us understand the tiny parts of our universe. It also helps engineers plan how machines will work.
