Closed system

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Scientists often study things in a closed system. A closed system is a set of parts that stays separate from the world around it. In this system, matter cannot move in or out. Matter is the "stuff" that makes up things.

Even if matter stays inside, energy can still move. Energy is the power that makes things happen. It can move in as heat or work. An ice cooler is a good example. Heat can move through the cooler, but the ice and water stay inside.

In chemistry, scientists use closed systems for tests. This helps them reach thermal equilibrium. This is when things reach a steady state of heat. It helps them study how things change without extra parts getting in the way.

In a closed system with a chemical reaction, atoms stay the same. New molecules might form, but the total number of atoms stays constant. This means no atoms are lost or added. In engineering, these are called bound systems. This means every input and result is known. It makes hard problems much simpler to solve.
