A system is a group of parts that work together.

These parts follow rules to act as one whole. Systems can be natural or made by people. Natural systems include the solar system or living things. Human-made systems are built for a specific purpose.

We can group systems by how they act. Most systems are open systems. They take in things like matter or power. They also send things out to the world. A car or the Earth are open systems.

Some systems are closed. They swap power with the world but not matter. A computer is a closed system. The last kind is an isolated system. These do not swap matter or power with anything else. The universe is a theoretical example of this.

A system can also have smaller parts inside it. We call these parts subsystems. A subsystem is a system itself. It is also a part of a larger system. Scientists study these parts to see how they work together.
