Mechanization is the way we change how work gets done. It is the process of moving from using only hands or animals to using machines.

In the past, simple hand tools were the main way to make things. Modern mechanization uses much more complex machines. These machines often use gears, pulleys, or belts to work. They can even change how something moves, like turning a back-and-forth motion into a spinning one.

This change helps people do much more work than they could alone.

Many machines work by using a prime mover. A prime mover is a device that turns energy into mechanical work. Some use water, like the water wheels used in the Roman period. Others use wind, like windmills or wind turbines. Many modern machines use an internal combustion engine or an electric motor.

These engines use fuel to create power. Electric motors use electricity to turn gears and shafts. This allows machines to run at very high speeds. It also lets different machines in a factory run at different speeds.

People have been building machines for a very long time. In ancient China, people used water-powered bellows for furnaces in 31 AD. By the 13th century, water wheels were powering sawmills and trip hammers.

Clock makers were very important in the history of machines. They helped develop tools to cut gears and screws. Around 1650, a mathematician named Desargues built a mill with special teeth. In the 1700s, the Industrial Revolution brought even more change. The Newcomen steam engine was first used in 1712 to pump water from mines.

New inventions changed how we live and farm. In 1700, Jethro Tull invented the seed drill for agriculture. This tool helped plant seeds at the right depth and spacing. In 1801, a machine called the Fourdrinier was patented to make paper.

Before this, people had to make every sheet of paper by hand. In 1905, a machine was made to create glass bottles. This machine replaced the work of skilled glass blowers. It allowed factories to make many bottles very quickly for everyone to use.

Mechanization is all around us in our daily lives. We see it in the tractors that help grow our food. We see it in the cranes used to build tall buildings.

Even in the military, mechanization is used to move troops in armored vehicles. Some machines go even further through a process called automation. Automation uses sensors to provide feedback to a system. This allows the machine to perform tasks automatically with very little help from people. It is a huge step beyond simple mechanization.
