Sand casting is a way to make metal objects using sand.

This method uses sand as the material for a mold. A mold is a hollow shape that holds liquid. People make these parts in special factories called foundries. In 2003, over 60% of all metal castings used this way. Sand is a great choice because it is cheap. It can also stand up to very high heat.

The way it works involves several careful steps. First, a maker builds a pattern of the object. This pattern can be made of wood, metal, or plastic. Next, workers pack sand around the pattern inside a box. This box is called a flask. The flask has two halves named the cope and the drag.

After the sand is packed, the pattern is removed. This leaves a hole in the shape of the object. Then, workers pour hot, molten metal into the hole. Finally, the metal cools and becomes a solid part.

History and tools help us understand this craft. In places like Auckland and Nelson, New Zealand, workers used special tools for this between 1946 and 1960.

Pattern makers must be very careful with size. They use a rule called a contraction allowance. This means the pattern is slightly larger than the final part. This is because metal shrinks as it cools down. If the pattern was not larger, the metal part would be too small.

There are many important facts about the materials used. The sand is often mixed with a bonding agent like clay. This mixture is sometimes called green sand.

It is called "green" because the sand is still wet. It is not actually the color green. Workers use different types of sand like silica or chromite. They also use cores to make hollow spaces inside the metal.

These cores can be made of sand or even metal.

You can see sand casting in many things you know. It is used to make engine blocks for cars.

It can also make parts from bronze, aluminum, or steel. Some metal parts might even have a rough texture. This texture comes from the grains of the sand. This is often called a sand skin. Some designers keep this look because they think it looks nice.
