Metal casting is a way to make many different shapes.

It is a very important tool for making things. People use it for jewelry and art. It is also used for making tools and weapons. Most of the durable goods we use every day are made this way. This includes cars, trucks, and even trains. You can find castings in wind turbines and medical devices too.

It is a great way to make complex shapes. Some shapes are too hard to make any other way.

How does the casting work? First, the metal is heated until it is a liquid.

This liquid metal is poured into a mold. A mold is a hollow shape that holds a negative image. This means the mold is the opposite of the shape you want. The metal enters the mold through a small channel called a sprue.

Next, the metal must cool down. Once it is cool, the metal part is pulled out. This finished part is called a casting.

People have used casting for thousands of years.

One very old way is called lost-wax casting. This method uses beeswax to make the pattern. Today, people use high technology waxes instead. Some people use sand casting to make things. Sand casting is very simple and has been used for centuries. It can make tiny items or huge train car beds. This method is good for making many different types of metals.

There are many different kinds of molds. Some molds are called expendable molds. This means the mold is used only once and then broken. Sand, plaster, and even plastic can be used for these.

Other molds are called non-expendable molds. These are permanent molds made of metal. You can use them over and over again. This helps make many parts that are exactly the same. Die casting is a way to use high pressure to fill these molds. This is good for making many small parts quickly.

Casting connects to many things in your life. You might see a bronze sculpture in a park. That sculpture may have been made with casting. You also use things every day made from cast metal. Your kitchen appliances and even your toys might have cast parts.

Even big things like aircraft door frames use this process. It is a way to turn liquid metal into the solid world around us.
