Die casting is a special way to make metal parts.

It works by forcing liquid metal into a mold under high pressure. This mold is called a die cavity. The cavity is made using two pieces of hardened tool steel. These pieces are called dies. One is the cover die half and the other is the ejector die half.

This method is great for making many parts very quickly. It is best for small or medium-sized items. Because it is so fast, it produces more castings than any other method.

There are two main ways this works. The first way uses a hot-chamber machine.

In this machine, a pool of melted metal sits inside. A piston moves to push the metal into the die. This is a very fast process. It can do about 15 cycles every minute. The second way uses a cold-chamber machine.

Here, the metal is melted in a separate furnace first. Then, the liquid metal is moved to an unheated chamber. A piston then drives the metal into the die. This method is used for metals like aluminum.

People have used die casting for a long time. The first equipment was invented in 1838. It was used to make metal type for printing. In 1849, the first patent was granted for a small machine. Later, in 1885, Ottmar Mergenthaler made the Linotype machine. This machine cast a whole line of type at once. It helped change the publishing industry forever. In North America, the Soss machine was the first to be sold openly. Later, General Motors released the Acurad process in 1966.

Many different metals can be used in this process. Zinc is the easiest metal to cast. It is very good for making small parts. Aluminum is very lightweight and stays strong at high temperatures. Magnesium is the lightest alloy used in die casting. Copper is very hard and has great wear resistance. Some alloys are even as strong as steel parts. Some special alloys made of lead and tin are used for accuracy. However, these are not used for food service for health reasons.

Engineers must plan the shape of the metal part carefully. They use something called draft to help the part slide out. Draft is a slight slope on the sides of the mold. Without it, the part might get stuck. They also use fillets to turn sharp edges into smooth curves. Sometimes they add ribs to make a part stronger. They might even add bosses to create mounting points. These small details ensure the metal part is high quality and works perfectly.
