Machines push hot, liquid metal into a mold. This mold is a hollow shape. It is made from two hard steel tools. These tools are called dies. One is the cover die half. The other is the ejector die half.

There are two main types of machines. A hot-chamber machine has a pool of liquid metal. A piston pushes the metal into the die. These are very fast. They work well with zinc or tin. A cold-chamber machine is different. The metal is melted in a separate furnace first. Then, the metal is moved to the machine.

This way is used for metals like aluminum.

Many metals can be used. Zinc is easy to cast. Aluminum is very light. Magnesium is also very light. Copper is very hard and strong. This process makes many parts quickly. It is great for making small or medium parts. It helps make things like car parts or home tools.
