Drawing is a way to shape materials.

It works by pulling a material through a die. A die is a tool with a shaped hole. As the material is pulled, it stretches. It becomes longer and thinner. This can be done with metal, glass, or plastic.

There are two main types of drawing. One type uses flat sheets of metal. The metal moves to fit a shape. Workers must find a careful balance here. Too much pressure can break the metal. Not enough pressure can cause wrinkles.

The second type is for wires, bars, and tubes. First, the end of the material is made thin. This helps it fit through the die. Then, a machine pulls the rest through. This is often done at room temperature. We call this cold working. It makes the surface look bright and smooth.

Sometimes, the material is pulled while it is hot. This helps with very large wires or rods. For complex shapes, the material goes through many dies. It may also undergo annealing. Annealing is a heat treatment. It softens the material so it can stretch more easily.
