It is a type of subtractive manufacturing. This means you start with a large piece of material. Then, you remove parts of it to find a new shape. Most people use metal for this. But you can also machine wood, plastic, or ceramic.

A person who does this work is called a machinist. They often work in a machine shop. Many modern machines use computer numerical control, or CNC. This means computers control how the machines move.

Traditional machining uses sharp tools. The tool must be harder than the material it cuts. Some tools have one sharp edge. Others have many edges and they spin. You can make circular shapes by turning the part. You can also make straight shapes by milling.

There are also new ways to cut. Waterjet cutting uses a fast stream of water. Electrical discharge machining, or EDM, uses electricity to melt the material. This helps make very tiny or complex shapes.
