A wire is a long, thin bar of metal.

Most wires are round. However, they can also be square or hexagonal.

To make wire, people use a way called drawing. This means pulling metal through a small hole. We call this hole a die.

The die can be made of hard steel. For very fine work, people use diamonds or rubies. These stones stay the right size for a long time.

There are two main types of wire. The first is solid wire. This is one single piece of metal. It is strong and cheap to make.

It is good for things that do not need to bend.

The second type is stranded wire. This is made of many tiny wires bundled together. Stranded wire is much easier to bend. It is used for things like computer mouse cords. Using more strands makes the wire even more flexible. For example, a heavy cable might have over 5,000 tiny strands!

Many wires are covered in plastic. This is called insulation. It helps keep the electricity inside the wire.

Some cables even have many layers to protect them.
