Forging

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Forging is a special way to shape metal using heavy force. This force is called compressive force. It comes from hitting the metal with a hammer or a press.

Forged parts can be very small or very large. Some weigh less than one kilogram. Others can weigh hundreds of metric tons.

This process is important for making strong parts. It is used widely in machines and mechanisms today.

There are different ways to work the metal. One way is called open-die forging. In this method, a hammer strikes the metal on a stationary anvil. The dies do not fully enclose the metal. This allows the metal to flow in many directions.

Another way is impression-die forging. This is also called closed-die forging. The metal is placed inside a die that looks like a mold. When the hammer drops, the metal fills the empty spaces.

Some metal might squeeze out of the sides. This extra metal is called flash.

People have been forging metal for thousands of years. In the past, smiths used a simple hammer and anvil. They made things like kitchenware, jewelry, and hand tools.

In the 12th century, people began using water power. This allowed them to use large trip hammers. These hammers could forge much larger pieces of iron. Today, forging is a huge global industry. Modern factories use electricity, steam, or hydraulics to power their tools.

Forging can happen at different temperatures. We call it hot forging if the metal is very hot. This happens above the recrystallization temperature. Hot forging is fast and very precise.

We call it cold forging if the metal is at room temperature. This can make the metal harder through a thing called work hardening. There is also warm forging. This happens when the metal is at a middle temperature.

Scientists use these temperatures to control how the metal behaves.

Forging makes metal parts much stronger than other methods. For example, forged parts have a higher strength-to-weight ratio than cast parts. This means they can be lighter but still very tough.

This is why the automotive industry uses forging so much. It is also used to make tools and engine parts. You can find forged metal in many machines you use every day. The way the metal grains flow makes the final part very reliable.
