3D printing is a way to build real objects from digital ideas.

This process is often called additive manufacturing. This name comes from the way the machine works. It builds things by adding material together instead of cutting it away. Most machines use a computer-aided design, or CAD model, to know what to make. The machine follows this digital map to build the object layer by layer.

This method lets people create very complex shapes. You can make parts that are hollow or have special internal patterns. These patterns can make a part strong but very light. This helps reduce material waste during the build.

One common way it works is called fused deposition modeling, or FDM.

In FDM, the machine uses a continuous string of plastic called a filament. The printer melts this plastic and pushes it through a nozzle. It lays the melted plastic down in thin layers to form a shape. Other methods use different materials like liquids or tiny grains of powder. These materials can be joined or solidified under computer control. Some machines use special light, like ultraviolet light, to harden liquid materials.

This allows the machine to build the object very precisely.

People have been thinking about this idea for a long time. In 1945, a writer named Murray Leinster wrote about a machine that could build things. He imagined an arm that followed drawings to make plastic objects. Later, in 1971, Johannes F. Gottwald patented a device for metal fabrication. In the 1980s, many inventors began working on real machines. Hideo Kodama invented a way to make plastic models in 1980. He used a special light to harden plastic in specific patterns.

His work was early, even if his research budget was small.

Many important patents helped create the printers we use today. In 1984, Bill Masters filed a patent for an automated manufacturing system. That same year, other inventors filed for a process called stereolithography. Chuck Hull later formed 3D Systems Corporation to release the first commercial printer. His machine was called the SLA-1 and came out around 1987.

Another inventor, S. Scott Crump, developed the FDM method in 1988. This FDM technology is what many people use at home today. It changed how we think about making things quickly.

3D printing connects digital worlds to our physical world.

You can start with a picture or a 3D model on a screen. Then, a machine turns that math into a solid object you can hold. It is like how a regular printer puts ink on paper. However, a 3D printer puts material in three dimensions. This can be used for many things, from making jewelry to building metal bridges.
