Industrial design is a way to plan how physical products look and work.

This process happens before a product is even made. Designers decide on the shape and the features of an object. This is important for mass production. Mass production means making many identical items at once using machines. This is different from craft-based design. In craft work, one person makes one item by hand. The creator decides the shape while they are actually making it.

Industrial designers often work in teams. These teams might include engineers and business experts. They use both creative ideas and scientific facts to solve problems. They want to make products that are beautiful and easy to use.

How does the design process work?

It starts by looking at the connection between a person and an object. Designers study how a product fits into its environment. They focus on things like form and function. Form is how something looks, while function is how it works. They also use ergonomics to help people. Ergonomics is the study of how tools fit the human body. Designers also think about sustainability. This means they try to make products that are better for the Earth. They want to solve problems through smart planning. This helps create new and better experiences for everyone.

For thousands of years, people used crafts to make things. Skilled workers made objects based on their own training. In the medieval period, large workshops appeared in cities like Florence and Venice. These groups of craftsmen made many objects with similar shapes. In the 16th century, people used pattern books to show decorative styles. Architects and shipbuilders also used drawings to plan their work. In 1667, King Louis XIV opened the Gobelins Manufactory in Paris. This was a large place where teams of artists made beautiful furniture and tapestries.

Modern industrial design grew during the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain. This happened in the mid-18th century. The term "industrial design" was first used around 1919. Joseph Claude Sinel is often linked to this name. However, the field was already growing. In 1907, the Deutscher Werkbund was founded in Germany. This group helped mix traditional crafts with new factory methods. In 1853, Jacques-Eugène Armengaud published a book about industrial design. It taught people how to do technical drawing. Later, in 1934, Robert Lepper helped start a design program in the USA. He worked at the Carnegie Institute of Technology.

Students can earn a Bachelor of Industrial Design degree. Some even earn a Master of Design later. This field is different from engineering. Engineering is an applied science that focuses on how machines move. Industrial design is an applied art. It focuses on how users interact with things. Designers might work on a motorcycle or a guitar.
