Plaster is a very useful building material. People use it to coat walls and ceilings. It can make a surface smooth or it can be used for decoration. When plaster is used to make raised patterns, it is called stucco.

This material is not meant to hold up a whole building. Instead, it is used for finishing surfaces. Sometimes, thick decorations need a hidden frame to support them. Plaster is also used in many other ways.

How does plaster work? Most types start as a dry powder. You must mix this powder with water to make a thick paste. This paste is easy to spread on a surface. When the water hits the powder, a reaction happens. This reaction releases heat through a process called crystallization. As it does this, the plaster hardens into a solid shape.

You can shape it with metal tools or sandpaper. You can even make shapes in advance and stick them in place with adhesive.

People have used plaster for a very long time. It was first used for building in the Middle East at least 5,000 years ago. In ancient Egypt, people burned gypsum in open fires. They crushed it into a powder to make mortar for the pyramids. In a place called Jericho, people even used plaster to decorate human skulls. The Romans later brought these plaster techniques to Europe.

There are different kinds of plaster. One kind is clay plaster, which uses clay, sand, and water. People often add straw, hay, or manure to it. These extra bits help the plaster stay strong and stop it from cracking. Another type is gypsum plaster, often called plaster of Paris. This name comes from a hill in Paris where people once heated gypsum. This white powder is very good at turning into a hard mass when it gets wet.

Plaster is helpful in many parts of our lives today. In medicine, doctors use gypsum casts to hold broken bones still. Dentists use it to make models of teeth from impressions. Artists use lime plaster for fresco painting. In this art, they apply colors to wet plaster so the paint becomes part of the wall.
