Gardeners clip leaves and twigs to make shapes. These shapes can be simple or very fancy. Some look like animals or geometric patterns. This art is like making a living sculpture.

In Roman times, people used topiary in gardens. They made figures of animals and tall obelisks. In East Asia, the style is different. In Japan, gardeners use cloud-pruning. They clip shrubs to look like old trees. These shapes look beautiful under the snow.

Many plants work well for this art. Most are evergreen plants with small leaves. Common choices include boxwood, yew, and holly. Some gardeners use wire cages to guide the plants. This helps the plant keep its shape as it grows.

Topiary is still popular today. At Disneyland, plants are shaped like cartoon characters. In India, there is a very tall topiary. It is the tallest in the world. It is shaped to honor a forest god.
