Agroforestry is a way to farm using both trees and crops.

Farmers grow plants like maize or beans near trees. Some trees, called legumes, help the soil by adding nitrogen. Nitrogen is a nutrient that helps plants grow strong.

This method helps the earth in many ways. Trees act like a shield for the dirt. They stop soil erosion, which is when wind or water carries soil away. Trees also provide shade for crops like coffee.

This can help plants stay healthy during dry times.

Agroforestry also makes homes for wildlife. Birds and bats can find food and nests in the trees. This adds biodiversity, or many different kinds of life, to the farm. Many people have used these ideas for a very long time. For example, indigenous groups in Central America use tropical home gardens. These gardens can have many different types of food and trees on just a small piece of land. This way of farming helps farmers earn more money and grow more food safely.
