Recreational fishing is a way people spend their time for fun, exercise, or even competition.

It is very different from commercial fishing, where people fish to make a profit. It is also different from subsistence fishing, which is done just to survive. Most people enjoy angling, which uses a rod and a reel. They use a line with hooks and special tools called terminal tackle. This tackle includes things like weights, floats, and swivels. Some fishers use fresh bait, while others use lures that look like prey.

There are many different ways to catch a fish. Some people go spearfishing by diving with a speargun or a harpoon. Others try bowfishing, which uses a bow or crossbow from above the water. You can even use your hands in activities called noodling or trout tickling. Some people use nets or even boomerangs, though some tools are banned because they can hurt the environment. People often look for "game fishes," which are popular species to catch. Big-game fishing targets huge fish like tuna, sharks, or swordfish from large yachts.

Fishing as a hobby has a very long history. In Macedonia, people long ago used red wool and feathers on hooks to trick fish.

In 1496, a woman named Dame Juliana Berners wrote an early English essay about fishing. Later, in 1653, Izaak Walton published a famous book called The Compleat Angler. This book celebrated the spirit of fishing with poems and stories. It helped make fly fishing a very popular sport. Another writer, John Dennys, wrote about the sport in 1613. He was said to be a friend of the famous poet Shakespeare.

As time passed, fishing became a big business. In the 1700s, shops began selling rods and tackle to everyone.

A man named Onesimus Ustonson ran a famous shop starting in 1761. He even received a Royal Warrant from kings. In 1836, Alfred Ronalds published a book called The Fly-fisher's Entomology. He used his skills as an engraver to include beautiful color pictures.

This book helped set a high standard for how fishing books are made today. It showed people exactly how to use different artificial flies.

Today, fishing is still a very active hobby around the world. In the United States, millions of people participate in fishing every year. Many people enjoy the peace of being near the water. Some fishers practice "catch and release" to help protect fish populations. This means they let the fish go back into the water after catching them. This helps make sure there are always fish for the future. Whether fishing from a boat or a riverbank, it is a way to connect with nature.
