A fishing line is a thin and very strong cord.

People use it for angling to catch fish. The line connects a hook to a rod or a reel. Most lines look like a very thin rope. They can be long or short and thick or thin. Many different things make up these lines. Some lines are made to stretch while others are very stiff. This helps people catch different kinds of fish in different waters.

Angling works when a fish swallows bait on a hook.

The hook then stays in the fish to tie it to the line. Once hooked, the person pulls the line to bring the fish in. This part is called landing the fish. Some fish are so big that you might need a net. You might even use a hooked pole called a gaff. Some people use a method called trolling to catch fish. This involves dragging lines through the water behind a moving boat.

Fishing lines have changed a lot over many years. Long ago, people used silk or even horse hair. In 1596, Leonard Mascall wrote about fishing with hooks and lines. By 1667, a man named Samuel Pepys wrote that lines were made of catgut. Later, silk lines were used around the year 1724. Today, most lines are made from artificial materials. These are often called synthetic polymers. Common ones include nylon, polyethylene, and fluorocarbon.

Modern fishing setups often have several different parts. The backing is the first part on the reel spool. It helps the main part of the line stay in place. The mainline is the big section that handles most of the pull.

The leader is the front part that connects to the hook. Leaders are often thinner so they fit through the small eye of a hook. Some leaders are made of metal like stainless steel or titanium. These metal wires protect the line from fish with sharp teeth. They also help if the line rubs against sharp rocks.

Different materials work in different ways to help an angler. Nylon is very common because it can stretch under a heavy load. This stretch helps when a strong fish pulls on the line. Fluorocarbon is another popular choice for many people. It is a dense plastic that sinks quickly in the water. It is also very clear, which makes it hard for fish to see. This is helpful if you want your bait to stay near the bottom.
