Sled

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A sled is a special vehicle made to slide.

Most sleds move over ice or snow. They work by using a smooth underside. Many designs use runners to support the body. These runners help reduce friction. Friction is the force that slows things down. By reducing friction, the sled can glide easily.

Some people even grease the blades with oil. This helps them slide over mud or hard ground too.

There are many ways to make a sled move. Some sleds are pulled by people. Other sleds are pulled by animals. You might see dogs, horses, or reindeer pulling a load. In the Philippines, people use a Kangga. This is a sled pulled by a carabao over muddy rice fields.

Modern sleds can also be pulled by engines. Snowmobiles and tractors are used for this today. Some special sleds even use the wind to move. These are called WindSleds and they are used in Antarctica.

Humans have used sleds for a very long time. We have evidence of sleds in North America from before 10,000 BCE. Sledges were also used in Sumer by 3,200 BCE. People in Ancient Egypt used them as well. In the past, sleds were very important for travel. In Russia, royals and bishops used a closed sled called a vozok. These were very fast for traveling across snowy plains.

Sleds were even prized because they did not have to pay tolls.

Different places use different names for these vehicles. In Britain, the word sledge is very common. In America, people usually say sled. A sleigh is often a large vehicle for passengers. It is like a carriage for the winter. In Australia, people use both sledge and sleigh. There are also many fun types of sleds for kids. You might use a round saucer sled or a wooden toboggan. Some people even use an inflatable tube to slide down hills.

Sleds can be used for work or for play. Some people use them for big adventures. In the 19th century, explorers used man-hauled sledges in the Arctic. Captain Scott used these for his expeditions. Others, like Roald Amundsen, used dog sleds instead. Today, people also use sleds for fast sports. Bobsleds are built with special shapes to go fast. There are also tiny sleds used for luge and skeleton racing. It is amazing how one simple idea can do so much.
