A vehicle is a machine made for self-propulsion. This means it can move itself. Most vehicles are made to carry people or cargo.

We see many different kinds of transport. Some move on land, like cars or bicycles. Others move on water, like ships and boats. Some even move through the air or in space.

Land vehicles are very common in our daily lives.

To move, a vehicle needs a way to handle the ground. Most land vehicles use wheels to roll. Rolling helps them move with very little friction. Friction is the force that resists motion. Some vehicles use tracks or rails instead. Others might use skis to slide across surfaces.

Some special vehicles even use maglev technology. This allows them to float without touching the ground. All these ways help the vehicle travel from place to place.

Vehicles also need an energy source to work. This energy provides the power for motion. Human power is one simple way to move. People use their own strength to pedal bicycles. Many machines use fuel to get energy. They burn fuel inside an internal combustion engine.

Other vehicles use batteries to store chemical energy.

Electric motors use this stored energy to run. Some even use wind, solar, or nuclear power.

Humans have been building vehicles for a very long time. Historians found rock paintings of boats from 50,000 to 15,000 BC. The oldest logboat is about 10,000 years old. In 1769, Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built a mechanical vehicle. Later, Karl Benz built the first automobile in 1885.

The Wright brothers flew the first powered aircraft in 1903. In 1969, NASA's Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. These steps helped us move from land to space.

Today, vehicles are part of almost everything we do. There are over 1 billion motor vehicles in use. There are also over 1 billion bicycles worldwide. Some models are made in huge numbers. The Toyota Corolla is the most-produced car model. The Honda Super Cub is the most-produced motorcycle.

Even planes and helicopters are made in the thousands. Vehicles help connect the whole world together.
