A fishing reel is a hand-cranked tool used for angling.

Its main job is to wind and stow fishing line. Most reels attach to a fishing rod. Some people even use them on bows for bowfishing. Modern reels help people cast with distance and accuracy. They also control the speed of the line. This stops the line from snapping or the hook from falling out.

There are two main ways a reel works. The first is the rotary-spool design. In this type, the spool actively turns to wind the line. Some of these are multiplier reels. They use an internal gear train to make the spool spin fast. This allows for much quicker line retrieval.

The second way is the fixed-spool design. Here, the spool stays still. A separate spinning mechanism moves around the spool to wrap the line. This design helps prevent the line from getting into a tangle.

History shows that fishing reels began in China.

Records from the 3rd century mention a device called an "angling lathe." A famous painting from 1195 shows an angler using a reel. These early designs were likely based on winches. They look a lot like modern centerpin reels.

In the 1760s, London shops sold gear-retrieved reels. The first popular American reel appeared around 1820. A watchmaker named George Snyder made the Kentucky Reel in 1810. This was the first American-made design. Later, companies like Shimano and Daiwa began to lead the market. They used their skills from making watches and bikes to build great reels.

Today, you can find many different types of reels. Some are used for deep-sea fishing from big boats. Others are used for fly fishing in small streams.

You might see a spinning reel or a baitcasting reel. Even though they look different, they all help you catch fish. They all use the same basic idea of managing a line. This makes fishing a fun hobby for many people.
