A winch is a helpful tool used to pull things. It can wind in a rope or a wire cable. It can also let a cable out or change how tight it is.

Most simple winches use a drum called a spool. A person can turn a hand crank to move the spool. Some winches do not store the rope on the drum. These are called capstans. Winches are very important for many machines. They are the basis for elevators and steam shovels. They even help tow trucks do their jobs.

How a winch works depends on its power. Some winches use a person's muscles to turn a handle. Other winches use electric or hydraulic power. Hydraulic power uses liquid under pressure to work. Some use air or even an engine that burns fuel.

To keep the rope from unwinding, a winch might use a brake. It might also use a ratchet and pawl. A pawl is a small part that stops the machine from slipping backward. When sailors use winches on boats, they often pull the loose end of the rope by hand. This helps them keep the tension just right.

People have used winches for a very long time. The writer Herodotus wrote about wooden winches in 480 BCE. They were used to tighten cables for a bridge. Winches might have been used in Assyria even earlier than that. By the 4th century BCE, the thinker Aristotle saw them being used for building.

In the year 1903, a racing boat named Reliance used modern winches. These winches were hidden below the deck. Before this, most boats used capstans on top of the deck. This change helped fishing boats bring in heavy nets much easier.

Winches are used in many different places today. Tow trucks use them to pull broken cars onto a flatbed. They use special hooks like J-hooks to grab an axle.

Some off-road vehicles have winches on their bumpers. These help pull cars out of mud, sand, or snow. In the air, winches help launch gliders from a trailer.

Rescue helicopters use winches to lower teams to people. They can also use them to lift heavy cargo. Even during wars, winches held large balloons in the sky.

You might see winches used in fun ways too. In wakeskate winching, a person is pulled across water.

A motor turns a spool to pull the rider at high speeds. Winches are also used in theaters. They are often hidden in the floor to move big scenery. Before the 1950s, radio antennas were very long. Pilots had to winch them out to use them. If they forgot, the antenna could break. This actually happened to the pilot Amelia Earhart on her last flight.
