A windlass is a clever tool for moving very heavy weights.

It helps people lift things that would be too hard to move by hand. The machine uses a horizontal cylinder called a barrel. You can turn this barrel using a crank or a belt. A rope or a cable wraps around the ends of the barrel. When you spin the barrel, the rope pulls a weight at the other end. This simple way of working makes a hard job much easier.

There are many ways a windlass can work. One type is called a differential windlass, or a Chinese windlass.

This version has two drums of different sizes on the same axis. The rope winds off one drum and onto the other. A pulley hangs in the middle of the rope. This setup allows a person to lift very large weights with very little force. Another kind is the Spanish windlass.

This uses a stick to twist a rope until it is very tight. It can pull heavy things like pipes or even cars out of the mud.

People have used windlasses for many centuries. The Greek scientist Archimedes is said to be the inventor.

Later, a military engineer named Vitruvius wrote about machines made of timber. Around the year 100 AD, Hero of Alexandria named the windlass as one of five simple machines. These machines were seen as the building blocks for all other complex tools. For a long time, people believed these five powers were the most important for moving weights.

History shows us many different uses for this tool. In the Middle Ages, workers used windlasses to build large churches. One example is the church in Chesterfield with its crooked spire.

Miners also used windlasses to haul heavy buckets up from gold mine shafts. They used them until the shafts reached 40 metres deep. After that, they switched to a different tool called a whip or a whim. In England, people even used a windlass to open locks on inland waterways.

Today, you might still see the name or the work of a windlass. On boats, an anchor windlass can be used to raise an anchor. This is a different way to do the same job as a vertical capstan. You might also think of a well when you see a windlass.

A long time ago, a wooden rod was placed across the mouth of a well to lift water. Whether it is moving a heavy post or pulling water from the ground, the windlass is a great helper.
