Engineers used math and science to solve many hard jobs. Some tools were made for war, like the torsion catapult. Other inventions helped with daily life, like the watermill. This machine used natural forces to do work.

It was a very important step in history. These machines helped people do things on a much larger scale.

Many machines worked by using water or movement.

The Archimedes' screw is a great example of this. It is a device that lifts liquids or solids to a higher place.

Another tool was the water clock. These clocks used water to track time. Some even had an alarm system. This could drop pebbles on a gong to wake someone up.

This shows how they used simple steps to create clever effects.

Many of these ideas came from famous thinkers.

Archimedes of Syracuse is credited with the screw. He also described the lever around 260 BC. Another engineer named Philo of Byzantium wrote about many tools. He described the water wheel and the chain drive. Ctesibius of Alexandria also made important things. He invented a primitive cannon that used compressed air. He even made a water clock with a dial and pointer.

Greek cities were very organized and clean.

The town of Miletus used a grid-like plan for its streets. This helped make the town easy to navigate. They also built great systems for water. The Minoan civilization used underground clay pipes for plumbing.

This helped supply water to baths and fountains. They even had drainage systems to keep cities healthy. Some streets, like the Porta Rosa, were paved with limestone blocks.

These ancient tools are like the ancestors of our modern machines.

The Antikythera mechanism used gears to track the sun and moon. This is a very early version of a computer.

They also built a way to measure distance called an odometer.

This helped people build better roads. Even the Diolkos acted like a very early railway. It was a path that was 6 to 8.5 km long. All these inventions show how much they understood the world.
